Wellow HortSoc, supported by the Wellow Composting Club, are now the owners of a garden shredder. This is available for hire by our members, and members of Composting Club, for just £20 for a weekend (or other two-day period). This is a small fraction of what it would cost to hire a similar machine commercially. If you are not already a member but wish to make occasional use of a shredder, you might want to consider joining (for the princely sum of £7 for a year’s subscription, or £12 for the whole family. The shredder is electrically powered and can be transported around either in the back part of a medium sized 5-door car or pulled on its wheels for short distances. A 30-metre extension lead is also provided with the machine – along with safety goggles and gloves.

 The machine can handle branches up
to 30mm thick (just over one inch), along with twigs and leaves. As well as dealing with garden and hedge cuttings you need to remove, it will also generate helpful mulch for your garden.

A short (20 minute) training session takes place before you use it to ensure you are familiar with how it works and relevant health and safety considerations.

We strongly believe this type of community sharing will help us reduce our carbon footprints. Our aspiration is to significantly reduce transport to and from the hire company’s depot, either for them to deliver to you, or for you to pick up and return. And by sticking to an electric model, we have avoided the polluting effects of petrol driven garden machinery. And finally, you create for yourself some most wonderful garden mulch!
